One of my favorite memories from our most recent stay was when we were invited to join Dani, Dwayne, and their family for dinner one Saturday evening. As guests at their farm, we were made to feel like part of the family, sharing laughter and enjoying a delicious home-cooked meal. Order a mimosa or a locally brewed cider. Let time slip away as live music plays in the background. Don’t forget to browse the market’s handcrafted goods—perfect for a unique keepsake.

The outdoor courtyard at the Houw Hoek Hotel is one of those spots that makes you want to linger. Order a cold beer or a crisp Elgin Sauvignon Blanc, settle into a comfy chair, and watch the sun glow against the mountains. Elgin is surrounded by winding mountain passes that are a dream to drive. Try these routes:

• Houw Hoek Pass – A short but scenic drive with rolling vineyards on either side.

• Franschhoek Pass – Worth the extra stretch if you want dramatic scenery and a rewarding wine-tasting stop in Franschhoek. Additional Tip: Visit Colmant Cap Classique and Champagne for the perfect bubbles in an intimate setting!

If you’re craving sea air, take the scenic 40-minute drive to Hermanus. This famous coastal town is known for its breathtaking cliffs, charming galleries, and world-class whale watching. I was lucky enough to spot whales in March, breaching and gliding through the waves just offshore. Stroll along the Cliff Path, explore the fantastic art galleries tucked into hidden corners, and end the day with fresh seafood overlooking the bay.
